To help you strike a balance in your life between enjoying today and planning for tomorrow.

Our Story

Our Focus is on You, Not Just the Numbers

We started CGN Advisors because we felt there was a different way—a better way—to do financial planning and investment management. As a fee-only advisory practice, we don’t sell investment or insurance products, so we don’t receive commissions or kickbacks for making recommendations. We feel this minimizes conflicts of interest and is the most objective way to provide financial advice.

Why CGN Advisors?

We don’t answer to a big corporation, like a brokerage firm or a mutual fund company. We work with clients on a fiduciary basis, meaning our loyalty is to you, our client. With a combined 50+ years of experience in financial services and investments, we understand that each clients' situation is unique, and therefore we do not offer "one size fits all" solutions.

You have worked hard to get where you are, and to honor that, we work hard to keep you headed in the right direction.  We keep you accountable to your future self, so that you can focus on what matters mostthe life you are living today.

A Collaborative Process With Approachable Professionals

Individuals & Families

We’ll start by learning about you and the goals that are most important to you. We’ll collaborate with you to create a plan to align your finances with your goals to help you enjoy life on your terms.

Protect YOU and your loved ones

Build a proper emergency savings fund. Use insurance to guard against catastrophic losses. Use proper estate planning strategies to plan ahead.

Build a diversified portfolio of quality investments

Invest for the long-term. Buy stocks of quality companies that have a proven track record of growth. Buy bonds of quality companies that generate income, provide for additional diversification and help control risk.

Enjoy life on your terms

Position yourself to be able to take family vacations, enjoy your hobbies, live your dreams, volunteer your time and give generously.

Our Investment Management Principles:

Long term focus

Investing is a long-term endeavor requiring patience.  Avoid chasing trends and returns.

disciplined research-driven process

Following a consistent, repeatable process grounded in principles leads to success over time.

control costs

Keeping an eye on costs can make a difference over time.  Investment costs include internal expenses of mutual funds and/or ETFs, transaction costs and tax consequences.

Focusing on diversification and quality can reduce volatility as well as risk of not reaching investment objectives.

active/passive management

As opposed to choosing between active or passive investments, efficiently constructing portfolios among active and passive investment, combined with active portfolio decisions can add excess risk-adjusted returns over time.

The following strategies are part of our core models, and structured in such a way that we have a cost efficient and effective solution for any account size. Please note that each strategy includes a Suggested Account Minimum based on the underlying costs and actual price of each fund within the model - while we do not require a minimum account size to invest, we also want to be conscious of cost efficiency.

Once we have assisted you in selecting the appropriate model, we then help determine your overall allocation between Stocks and Bonds in each account according to your overall financial plan and risk tolerance.  Portfolio target asset allocations range from Stock/Bond mixes of 100% Stocks down to 20/80, in increments of 10%, with the option to be 100% Bonds.

Each of these models can also be paired with certain other factors depending on the client situation, such as utilizing Municipal Bonds or our Managed Risk strategy (see below).

Suggested account minimum: $1,000 or $50/month investment

Strategically allocated portfolios that utilize low-cost, market cap weighted, passive/index ETFs.  Like all of our strategies, Core portfolios follow a strategic/long-term target allocation approach but limit costs through a small selection of index funds that represent broad asset classes, and maintain a very low underlying expense ratio.

Core Expanded

Suggested Account Minimum: $5,000

Strategically allocated portfolios that utilize market cap weighted, passive/index strategies.  Core Expanded builds off of the core strategy and goes one level deeper by dividing the broad asset classes into subclasses.  The 6-10 funds utilized in this strategy are further evaluated for market cap and value/growth style, as well as regional allocation.

Suggested Account Minimum: $10,000

Actively/intentionally managed portfolios utilizing a combination of active and passive mutual funds and/or ETFs, seeking intentional factor/style and sector exposure.  Intentional Portfolios introduce funds that utilize active management where account size permits in certain sub-class and regional exposures.

Suggested Account Minimum: $150,000

Actively/intentionally managed portfolios utilizing individual stock strategy along with a combination of active and passive mutual funds and/or ETFs.  Building on Intentional, Select utilizes our Select Equity SMA to represent the US Mid-Large Cap allocation, and is comprised of approximately 40-60 holdings including individual stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds.

Sustainable ESG

Suggested Account Minimum: $5,000

Actively managed portfolios with a focus on investments with High or Above Average Sustainability and ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) scores within their peer groups, with limited Controversy exposure. Data for scoring is derived from Morningstar Direct and Sustainalytics and is applied to the overall portfolio in a quantitative and consistent fashion. Portfolios may not meet certain values based on exclusionary requirements, rather seek to provide a larger exposure to companies that score higher according to the Sustainalytics methodology.

DFA Focus

Suggested Account Minimum: $25,000

Utilize primarily Dimensional (DFA) mutual funds.  The DFA Focus strategy closely mirrors our Core Expanded strategy, but utilizes DFA funds in certain sub asset classes for the investor that has preference towards Dimensional funds.

Designed to be utilized within a globally diversified portfolio to supplement stock and bond allocations in order to improve risk adjusted returns by focusing on downside risk management. May be appropriate for investors concerned about elevated market volatility and/or a persistent low interest rate environment.  This strategy utilizes low-cost, transparent ETFs and Mutual Funds that seek "defined risk" outcomes during various market environments, in order to capture similar upside as a traditional asset allocation while also limiting the downside capture.

Portfolio Management Fees

CGN provides professional investment management services for clients who wish to delegate the discretionary management of their portfolio based upon the following tiered schedule:

Total Assets Under ManagementAnnual Fee
$0 to $500,0000.75%
$500,001 to $5,000,0000.50%
$5,000,001 and above0.25%

CGN may aggregate accounts within a household for purpose of reaching the tiers above.
